All about the Nervous System!
Chiropractic care is targeted to help the nervous system in our body. Our nervous system is composed of 2 very important parts: the peripheral nervous system and the central nervous system.
Our central nervous system is made up of the brain and the spinal cord. The spinal cord sends sensory messages to our brain, and in turn sends back out motor messages, for us to respond. Sensory nerves are what carry messages from receptors to the brain. If you step on something sharp, pain receptors in your brain tell you to move your foot. Motor nerves send signals from the brain to the muscles within the body. These nerves facilitate actions like walking, running, or throwing a ball.
The peripheral nervous system sends the messages between the central nervous system and also the body. It is comprised of spinal nerves and cranial nerves that carry important messages to every single cell in your body.
The Autonomic Nervous System
A sub part of the peripheral nervous system is named the autonomic nervous system. The actions of the autonomic nervous system are normally automatic. The autonomic nervous system controls actions such as breathing, blinking, heartbeat, and many more things that you do not need to think about.
The autonomic nervous system is composted of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. The sympathetic system alerts the body when there is danger, or an emergency to react to. Like what happens if you press the gas pedal in your vehicle, everything in your body speeds up in what’s referred to as a “flight or fight” response. The parasympathetic system is the brake pedal, returning your body to usual once the danger is gone.
Chiropractic care is meant to enhance the integrity of the nervous system in order to make sure that everything works as the way it is meant to. This is why it is so important to have a chiropractor check your spine regularly.
We see many folks, adults and kids alike, who have a more active sympathetic nervous system, then others. This means that their body is stuck in fight or flight response, usually due to the stresses of everyday life. This can have a negative impact on things like our mood, and our immune system. Chiropractic treatment can help produce balance between the “gas pedal” and also the “brake pedal,” so your body can function to the best of its ability.
If you are interested in learning more about your nervous system, book an appointment with a local chiropractor and get them to check your spine to see if it is functioning at 100%. Chiropractic adjustments can help open up the nerves that are being blocked within your nervous system, to get you functioning back to your fullest potential.
